"xxx" Factor v. Sex Factor
Here are two exemplary online publications that express the tensions surrounding liberal and tolerant identifications with the cultural landscape of Amsterdam. While the first is a more general overview of the tourist gaze upon the city (from about a half a year ago), the second addresses the ongoing transformations that are occurring, largely due to the city's plans to reconfigure the historical center (specifically the areas surrounding the red light districts in the heart of the city). In both, the important points to consider are how Amsterdam's cultural identity as a liberal, tolerant city is being navigated and negotiated- especially in light of the recent policy reforms and subsequent reformulations within the cityscape.
Interestingly enough, the first tourists had an excellent time here without mentioning a single red light.. it's obvious that the city has more to offer than sins..
ReplyDeleteHowever, I think it's the dualism of Amsterdam, between culture and sinfulness, that allures peoples interest. Maybe it reflects something within us all? I mean, prostitutes will always be around, but in Amsterdam they're actually a part of the facade and not hidden..
And I think that any change that takes place for the sake of puritanism is a step back..
I don't think it's a step towards puritanism...perhaps, gentrification that is politically motivated. I consider the current transformations in the nature of the public spaces that once served as brothels as examples of the city's facade of "tolerance." This is pre-supposes the Dutch accurately claim they are "non confrontational." But, if there is a confrontation, tolerance is replaced with tension that only gives way in those tragic situations in which xenophobia trumps- booo to that! Just a theory.
